In the vSphere Web Client the “Use Windows session authentication” is grayed out

When logging in the vSphere Web Client login page the “Use Windows session Authentication” check box is grayed out. To solve this you need to install the Client Integration Plug-in.

The Client  Integration Plug-in provides:

  • Access to the VM console
  • Deploy OVF or OVA templates
  • Transfer files with the datastore browser
  • Use Windows Session authentication

Without the VMware Client Integration Plug-in, the “Use Windows session Authentication” check box is grayed out (1) in the vSphere Web Client login page.

After installing the VMware Client Integration Plug-in (2) from the vSphere Web Client login page, the Use Windows session Authentication check box option can be checked and the current login setting are used in the vSphere Web Client.

  1. Perfect! The plug-in enabled the use of that box straight away.

Now I have 1 VC where it works perfectly and another where it doesn’t. I get “Provided Credentials are not valid”. If I type the SAME credentials in manually I get in without issue.

  2. We upgraded to Vcenter 5.5.0b and now the “use windows credentials” is greyed out no matter what (tried uninstalling/reinstalling the new plugin several times)

  3. Windows 8.1 Ent, multiple installs/Uninstalls using RunAs Administrator and not…….same result. STILL Greyed out.

  4. @greyed out problem. I found it’s not so much using 5.5/6.0, it’s the fact that the browsers are updating their s/w. Since Chrome really cracked down on NPAPI, I’ve had to switch to FireFox, and implement KB(2125623):

To disable security.ssl3.dhe ciphers in Mozilla Firefox:
    >Open a new browser tab in Mozilla Firefox.
    >In the address bar, enter:
    about:config

    >Accept the warning by clicking
    “I’ll be careful, I promise”
    >In the search field, enter
    security.ssl3.dhe and press Enter.
    >Locate these ciphers below:

    security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_128.sha
    security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_256_sha

    > Right-click and select Toggle to set their Values to False.
    > Refresh or launch the vSphere Web Client landing page and use the CIP feature.
